is it safe to use milk thistle supplement on a daily basis to help protect the liver?

April 14th, 2010

I take about 400 mg daily to help my liver as I have been a heavy drinker, cutting down now though. I am 28, female, normal weight.

Yes, it is perfectly safe to take milk thistle long term

milk thistle appears to be well tolerated in recommended doses for up to six years

Dr. Lee adds, there’s no evidence to suggest any problems with taking the herb over the long term, which suggests that it’s safe to take regularly as a preventive

honestly, exercise might sound like a cliche, but it really is the best way to lose weight. you should probably do more than 30 minutes work out each day though. and do a healthy combination of weight lifting and cardio (BOTH are equally important)

Yes, green tea does work. it has helped me a lot.

Is it best to take Milk Thistle capsules in the morning with my breakfast or before bed?

April 12th, 2010

I’ve recently been taking 2 a day in the morning with my breakfast with a daily multivitamin/mineral tablet and a kelp tablet.
Is this ok?

As long as the bottle doesn’t say otherwise, you can take milk thistle any time of day, with or without food. The bottle likely says "with water", which means you can take it as I mentioned.
You can certainly take Milk Thistle with Kelp or a multivitamin. However, if your multivitamin has Iodine in it (which would probably be around 150 mcg), I wouldn’t recommend taking the Kelp with that unless your doctor recommended to… that can be too much Iodine for most people and is a very high dose regardless.
Good luck and I hope I helped!

Would Valerian Root help me with my anxiety?

April 12th, 2010

I have it because I have anxiety and I bought it for my car trip to go on vacation, but that’s just when I had anxiety about being stuck in the car. But lately I’ve been having trouble with school and stuff, and I was wondering if taking valerian Root capsules would help me at all.

Yes they will I know this from experience take 1-2 during the day and 1-2 at night. The good thing about these pills is that they’re 100% Whole Herb and they have no side-affects, they also make you feel relaxed and calm….

milk thistle and dandelions good for ur Liver?

April 10th, 2010

Alot of ppl say milk thistle and dandelion roots are good for the liver. I was wondering if there is any studies or facts to back this claim up. And if so, where can i purchase theses items and how would i go about taking them? Is milk thistle a actual Milk? do you just eat the root of dandelions?

Dandelion root:

—Medicinal Action and Uses—Diuretic, tonic and slightly aperient. It is a general stimulant to the system, but especially to the urinary organs, and is chiefly used in kidney and liver disorders.

Dandelion is not only official but is used in many patent medicines. Not being poisonous, quite big doses of its preparations may be taken. Its beneficial action is best obtained when combined with other agents.

The tincture made from the tops may be taken in doses of 10 to 15 drops in a spoonful of water, three times daily.

It is said that its use for liver complaints was assigned to the plant largely on the doctrine of signatures, because of its bright yellow flowers of a bilious hue.

In the hepatic complaints of persons long resident in warm climates, Dandelion is said to afford very marked relief. A broth of Dandelion roots, sliced and stewed in boiling water with some leaves of Sorrel and the yolk of an egg, taken daily for some months, has been known to cure seemingly intractable cases of chronic liver congestion."

milk thistle:

"It is in popular use in Germany for curing jaundice and kindred biliary derangements. It also acts as a demulcent in catarrh and pleurisy. The decoction when applied externally is said to have proved beneficial in cases of cancer.

Gerard wrote of the Milk Thistle that:
‘the root if borne about one doth expel melancholy and remove all diseases connected therewith. . . . My opinion is that this is the best remedy that grows against all melancholy diseases,’
which was another way of saying that it had good action on the liver. He also tells us:
‘Dioscorides affirmed that the seeds being drunke are a remedy for infants that have their sinews drawn together, and for those that be bitten of serpents:’
and we find in a record of old Saxon remedies that ‘this wort if hung upon a man’s neck it setteth snakes to flight.’ The seeds were also formerly thought to cure hydrophobia.
Culpepper considered the Milk Thistle to be as efficient as Carduus benedictus for agues, and preventing and curing the infection of the plague, and also for removal of obstructions of the liver and spleen. He recommends the infusion of the fresh root and seeds, not only as good against jaundice, also for breaking and expelling stone and being good for dropsy when taken internally, but in addition, to be applied externally, with cloths, to the liver. With other writers, he recommends the young, tender plant (after removing the prickles) to be boiled and eaten in the spring as a blood cleanser.
A tincture is prepared by homoeopathists for medicinal use from equal parts of the root and the seeds with the hull attached."

As clinical studies are rarely conducted on homeopathic remedies and supplements, you have two basic choices for a source to purchase:

1. a homeopathic doctor (go by recommendations of success stories from other patients when choosing a healthcare provider of any type).

2. a reliable, local health food store with a reasonable selection and informed staff – privately owned shops are best from my experience (if possible, avoid national chains!). Before you purchase, make sure to educate yourself (i.e. web searches) on the various forms that each "remedy" is available and the effectiveness of the delivery system (liquid, gel caps, tablets, powders etc.) for the supplement you plan to purchase. Personal experience dictates that liquids and gel caps are best, as tablets are not always completely digested and absorbed.

Often, if you feel your liver requires detoxifying, it is also wise to consider a general cleanse, to ensure your digestive system and your body’s abillities to absorb any nutrients is not compromised (candida is a large concern for nearly everyone who eats a North American diet. You might wish to amend your diet if only temporarily to avoid gluten, dairy products, sugar, and meat. Iodized (table) salt should be altogether boycotted, and replaced with sea salt. Do not eat any foods containing hydrogenated fats and oils – and remove them entirely from your diet!

:) I hope this helps you.

Just put the contents of 4 bags of valerian teabags into a cake. What happens if someone eats this?

April 10th, 2010

And how long will it take for the effects to kick in.

valerian is a mild sedative and relaxant a person eating that cake might feel more relaxed or drowsy but you should tell people when you put something unexpected into a dish in case the are allergic and the effect is gradual and differs from person to person

How long should I take Fenugreek & Blessed Thistle for milk production?

April 8th, 2010

I’ve been taking Fenugreek & Blessed Thistle for about 10 days now to increase my milk supply. It has worked very well, but I don’t know if I am supposed to continue taking it to keep the supply going or stop taking it because my milk production is where I want it. By the way, in case it makes a difference, I was unable to get my son to latch so I am exclusively pumping. Thanks.

My son was in the NICU for 9 days and came home on a bottle. I, too, was not able to get him to latch on. I found that pumping and feeding him the breastmilk in the bottle was a great solution (especially with a school age child who is on the go!) My ped. advised that I could stay on the Fenugreek as long as I was nursing. She stayed on it herself while she nursed her twins. By the way, I tried the breast again when he was 2 1/2 months and with just a little practice he took right to it. So, now I pump in the daytime and nurse for his one night feeding. It works really well! Good luck!
