How do you make plant extracts or plant oils?

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

For example: mint oil/extract, rosemary extract, etc.

These are to be used for medicinal purposes.

Thanks! =]

I make my own rosemary extract by filling up a dark glass container with dried rosmary leaves (crush them with your fingers) then I pour alchohol to slightly cover them….then I leave it in a warm but not too warm place for say a month and there you have it..

Where or what kind of store can i buy clay and oil extracts?

Friday, February 19th, 2010

So i can make home made face masks, scrubs, and lotions.
I don’t want to buy it online.

Usually you can find these at any Health Foods store or Natural stores (Trader Joes, Wegmans, Whole Foods, local organic stores).

Doing a quick online search – here are some online vendors I found (I can not atest to their validity, etc):

How are plants extracts made is it the same process used for sugar making?

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

For sugar making you follow these steps:
1. PLANTING > for plant extract too
2. COLLECTING THE HARVEST > for plant extract too
3. CLEANSING AND GRINDING > for plant extract too
4. JUICING: in sugar making the shredded pieces of sugarcane are somewhat squeezed, that`s a rather seldom method to make plant extracts. Mostly solvent extraction is used. But you can do it,if the plant contains a high amount of juice.
5. CLARIFYING > for plant extract too.
6. EVAPORATION > for dry plant extract only
7. CRYSTALLIZATION > in extracting a specific ingredient only
8. REFINERY > in a certain way for plant extract too
9. SEPARATION > In plant extract no
10. PACKING > in plant extract too.

What is the simplest way to get ethanol extracts from plants?

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

seeds / bark, to be precise

Extraction of ethanol from seed is different than bark normally ethanol extracted from plant which have starch, glucose or fructose as reserve material.

1.oil is extracted first from seed by crushing and then it is reduced in presence of hydrogen so long fatty acid chain convert into smaller molecule which is then hydrolyze to convert into alcohol.

2.Similarly bark is crushed and dissolved into water, which then go for frictional distillation to get different different by product which on hydrolysis give you alcohol.

These are theoretical idea i have never done myself.

Where can I buy fruit flavorings and extracts?

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

I want to start experimenting with different flavors of frosting for the cookies I make, but I don’t know off the top of my head where to buy different flavorings.

I know that my grocery store sells mint flavoring, but would they carry any others?

I also know that I can buy them online, but I’d prefer not to.
Thanks!

Kroger carries lemon, orange, raspberry, maple and Jamaican rum, in addition to peppermint and vanilla. Sometimes you may find others at Hobby Lobby or Michael’s, in the cake decorating section

What is the difference between the salvia extracts 5x – 80x?

Monday, February 8th, 2010

The difference is in concentration of the active compound Salvinorin A.

1gram 5X extract is equivalent to 5 grams of raw leaf
1grams 80X extract is equivalent to 80 grams of raw leaf

The way extract is made, the Salvinorin A from 5 grams of leaf is extracted and deposited on 1 gram of fresh leaf, and so you get 1gram of 5X, in other words, one gram of leaf, with the Salvinorin A concentration of 5 grams.

This makes it easier to use, because you don’t have to puff your way through 5grams of leaf, you just do that one gram.

The problem is that a lot of these companies aren’t actually giving you an 80X extract. Anything above 40-60X is basically impossible to tell the difference – you just black out – so they can call it 200X for marketing purposes, but you’re not going to know the difference.

Also, don’t fall into the "bigger is better" trap. Just cause there IS a 40X doesn’t mean you will enjoy it more than a 10X. It depends on your personal situation and level of experience. Don’t be a hero, or an idiot.

Here’s what BlackHatBotanicals.com says…
http://blackhatbotanicals.com/faq.html#productinfo

"I’ve never tried Salvia. What would you recommend?
From customer feedback, 10x or 20x extract is considered the best place to start for newbies. Return customers may prefer to order stronger extract and use less product. Higher strength extracts are not only more cost effective, but also allow customers to enjoy the full potential of the product with ease. However, we strongly urge our customers to practice common sense, have a sitter present, etc."

What is the difference between salvia extracts and dried leaves?

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Extracts are concentrated amounts of the active ingredient Salvinorin A. When you see Salvia 20X, that means that 20 grams of plain salvia leaf were used (the Salvinorin A was extracted from the 20 grams) to make 1 gram of 20X Salvia. So you can see the potential for how strong the extracts are. You can find extracts anywhere from 5X to over 90X, but using a legit extract over 35X is dangerous and probably useless as the extracts become less potent as you start getting in to those ridiculously high numbers. Potency is lost during the extraction process so seeing 90X is not really 90 times stronger than the plain dried leaf. 10X or 15X should be someones starting point.

The plain dried leaf is really not of much use unless mixing it with other substances, which I do not recommend.

Can someone under 21 buy flavor extracts containing alcohol?

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

So I need to go get some things for my mom from the super market, and I’m 17. On the list is a lemon extract containing 84% alcohol (almost as much as everclear!). Can I buy this or does someone 21 years old have to buy it? I just don’t want to look stupid when I get carded for buying some flavorings.

its considered food so it doesnt fall under liquor laws.
