Does the body build up a dependence to Valerian root as a sleeping aid?

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Once in a while I take this herb to help me fall asleep. Will this problem of dependence arise?

Taking it occasionally wouldn’t be a problem.
I’ve read on some bottles that you shouldn’t take valerian for more than 2 weeks (that’s every day) because it may start to cause dependancy. I’ve also heard that it may create insomnia too. Although, if it works for you, that’s good! As long as you aren’t taking it every day for long-term.

And just to point out to the other poster, a night terror isn’t like extreme insomnia. It’s like an extreme nightmare. You look like you’re awake (the person moves, talk, and usually their eyes are open), but their sleeping. Almost like sleep-walking, except they’re in extreme terror of something they "see". I got a couple when I was young and under stress. My parents said I dreamt that there were thousands of frogs and mosquitos swarming me, and I was screaming and swatting the air. I’ve seen my sister have them too. It’s scary to the person that’s watching it, because you can’t do anything to calm the person down. After the person wakes up, they usually don’t remember anything.

Taking Valerian Passion Flower herbal capsules for anxiety, anything better to take?

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Hi, I’m currently taking valerian Passion Flower herbal capsules for some anxiety that I been having off and on during driving. I know they’ve been helping with calming my mind but is there anything else out there that is better? And nothing that costs an arm and a leg. Thanks.

Go to a doctor and get meds prescribed. I pay like $3 for my prescription anxiety meds. :-]

how long after I take Valerian Root should I wait before consuming alcohol?

Friday, March 5th, 2010

How many hours should I wait after taking Valerian Root until it is safe for me to drink alcohol without worrying about any illnesses or negative cross interactions between the two?
I will take valerian root on occasion for anxiety. It isnt like i take it at the same time with alcohol. I just want to know a safe amount of time in between the two

Valerian pills are sold for sedatives. Why would you need alcohol on top of this? Alcohol initially sedates you then will eventually give further depression as it withdraws throughout your system. This defeats the purpose of having a calm and stressless time. There is no evidence to suggest alcohol should not be taken after Valerian but, like most drugs, wait at least 2 hours for the Valerian to absorb into your system. Please drink sensibly, alcohol withdrawl is stressful.

What is a better natural sleeping aid Valerian Root or Melatonin?

Monday, March 1st, 2010

I just took two tablets of melatonin an hour ago and it hasn’t done a damn thing for me. I don’t want to take sleeping pills because they make me extremely groggy in the morning.

Different people will offer you different answers about valerian vs. melatonin. No one is right; they are just personal opinions. I once wrote a long list of natural sleep aids and have pasted it below. Perhaps the list will give you some ideas. It is so long it may put you to sleep.

There are herbs that are helpful for sleep, eg, valerian root, kava kava, chamomile, hops, passion flower, skullcap. If you get the real herbs, you can make teas out of them. Otherwise get the herbs in capsule form. Probably, valerian root and kava kava are the best.

You can also try trytophan, 5-HTP and melatonin (1-2 mg). I would not take melatonin for over a month unless a doctor says it is ok. Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland. If you take too much, your pineal gland might get "lazy" and produce less melatonin naturally. Life Extension and TwinLabs are probably the best brands, in that order.

A warm bath is a great way to relax in order to sleep. If you can’t take a bath, you can give yourself a foot massage with slightly warm massage oil, sesame oil, or castor oil from a health food store.

What was very helpful to me, especially when my mind was racing, was to lie in bed and listen to relaxation CDs, especially those that contain someone speaking with relaxing music in the background. Many of these CDs are available on eBay for very low prices.

A helpful technique is to relax your body one part at a time. So you could relax your feet, your lower legs, upper legs, moving up from your lower belly up to your chest, etc., etc.

Of course, guided relaxation methods can help, imagining yourself in the country, the beach, or whatever is most soothing to you.

If you have annoying thoughts or personal issues that run thru your mind when you are trying to sleep, you might have to deal with those issues first. You might want to talk to a counselor or therapist about that.

Is it safe to combine passion flower, valerian root and b complex vitamins for anxiety?

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

Or is it atleast safe to combine valerian root and possion flower together?

Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.

Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI – Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.
But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There’s this strange herb called "St John’s Wort" – it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John’s Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.

The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced… you have that "learned behavior" in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior – Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction… There are several other techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to….
