What is fennel and what can I substitute for it in a recipe?
What is fennel?
What can be a substitute for fennel in a recipe? I don’t have a specific recipe right now, but I want some options.
Thanks?!!?
Fennel is a vegetable. It has a bulb like bottom and a feathery top. When you cook with it you chop the bulb part and use that in a recipe. You can also use fennel seeds in a recipe. Both the seeds and the bulb have a licorice type flavor. I personally like it. It is very unique!
Really you can probably find fennel in any normal grocery store so you wouldn’t need to substitute anything for it. however, you can use endive instead of fresh fennel and just add some dry anise seeds to it. For fennel seeds substitute just anise seeds.
It’s pretty good and more common than you would think. Give it a try!

It is a bulb and looks similar to celery and onion crossed. There is NO substitute. It tastes somewhat like licorice.

If it’s fresh fennel you saute, then use a mild onion or leek. If you don’t have that, just omit.
If it’s the fennel seed (what makes Italian sausage have a particular flavor) there is no sub, just omit it.

fennel is a root plant. it sometimes gives food the taste and smell of black liqorice.here is a book to purchase "The Complete Book Of Herbs, Spices and Condiments From Garden To Kitchen To Medicine Chest" Carol Ann Rinzler author isbn# 0-8160-2008-6 go online to amazon do a search if they have it get it or go to your nearst book store with the name author and isbn# if it is in print they will have it for you. if it isnt in print look at the bookstore or online for a book like it. there are also book out there on substitutes i have one but cant find it. in my opinion if you do not like the taste or smell of black liquorice use another herb such as rosemary, thyme, cumin, garlic, basil the list is endless
